I remember when Once Upon a Time first came out. The idea of magic and fairy-tales in real life was exactly my cup of tea. Sadly, I never got into the show. Something about it just didn’t hook me. But, I loved the concept, and I felt like while the show was on air, people low-key believed in magic again.
It was like that period of time when people were reading the newest Harry Potter book or getting ready for the next movie. Everything was magical. And magic was everywhere.
I mentioned in my newsletter that I’m participating in National Novel Writing Month again this year. And, I’m working on a story that reminds me of the magic we felt in Once Upon a Time. That magic in modern day feeling.
Waking Rory is set in modern day. It follows Even (pronounced like Evan), an orphaned 17 year old, living with her uncle Nash. Nash is an executive for the family business, and he’s never home, which has prompted Even into poor behaviors to get his attention. But, she’s almost 18, so Nash finally puts his foot down, and gives her an ultimatum. Clean up her act, or boarding school.
It’s during a summer internship, while she’s once again up to no good, when she finds the tower. She wakes Aurora from a 1000 year slumber, and starts a summer romance like one she could never have seen coming.
I can’t say I was inspired by Once Upon a Time. I think I was more inspired by the idea of magic and fairy-tales in real life. The idea of, what if the prince never came? What if true love’s kiss took a thousand years to find her? And, what if that true love wasn’t a prince, or a princess? What if that true love was just a troubled 17 year old who has no clue what she’s doing?
And with the second Maleficent movie coming out, it’s the perfect time to give it a little LGBT+ love, right?
I’m so glad I get to bring you guys along for the journey as I write this story, and get to know the characters even better. It’s been a while since I was excited about a story in this way.
I get excited about all of my stories, but something about putting magic into an every day world really gets me hype.
Plus, they’re gay. So, there’s that.
